How-To: Clean Your Wheels & Tires (Advanced)

WHEELS/TIRES Advanced – ETA 2-3 Hours
So you have already learned to do to a basic cleaning of your wheels, tires & wheel wells. Here we are going to show you how do give these areas a very deep and detailed cleaning. This is something you may do 1-2 times a year.

Items Needed:

Degreaser (ie: Megs Super Degreaser, APC+, P21s t.a.w.)
Cheap Microfiber Towels (costco has 20 for $10)
Detailer Spray (ie: Megs Last Touch Detailer, Chemical Guys Extreme Slick Synthetic, Poorboys Quick Detailer Plus)
Rubber/Plastic Dressing (ie: Mes Hyper Dressing, All Season Dressing, Water Based Dressing, Adams Invisible Undercarriage Spray)
Cheap Paintbrush
Meguiars Last Touch Detailer
Edge Foam Swabs
Tire Dressing (ie: Poorboys Bold N Bright, Megs Endurance Gel, Swissvax Pneu, Chemical Guys VRP Dressing 2)

1. Start with something that looks like this.

2. Grab your Degreaser & MF Towel

3. Spray degreaser on the rims tires and inner fender

4. Wipe the items in the same order you sprayed. In this part you can use a tire brush and a wheel brush instead of wiping them down. When wiping down the inner fender take your time, turn your wheels all the way to one side so you can access most of the inner fender. I used a harder paintbrush to help agitate the degreaser and reach areas I just couldn’t quite reach. Repeat spray and wipe down if necessary.

5. Once you are happy with your results Take your rubber/plastic dressing and spray generously within the inner fender. You want to spray this first so that once you are finished with the wheels and tires you can come back and wipe off excess dressing.

6. Spray detailer around your wheels, and wipe down with MF towel.

7. You can use foam swabs, paint brush, or Q-tips to get hard to reach areas.

8. Get your tire dressing and paintbrush and apply the dressing to your tires

9. Once you are finished go around your inner fenders and wipe off any excess dressing still left with a MF towel, and you should have something like this.

2008 Honda Fit Sport – Eco Waterless Wash Video

I gave this 2008 Honda Fit Sport a waterless wash using Chemical Guys ECOSMART waterless wash solution, spray bottle, and a few microfiber towels. I was able to remove hard water spotting, bird droppings, and road tar & grime with no excessive rubbing.

Steps:
1. Spray solution on the car (works on body, windows, and wheels)
2. Lightly wipe away the solution (do not put pressure when wiping solution away)
3. Change to a new side of your microfiber towel often (change towels when needed)
4. Haze will appear, buff it to a shine (the haze is carnauba wax)

How-To: Wash Your Car

WASH – ETA 30-60 Mins

Here I will go over the products and process I use to wash a vehicle.

Pre-Treat – Meguiar’s D130 Body Solvent
2BM – 2 Buckets (Home Depot / Lowes $3 buckets work just fine.)
Grit Guards – Grit Guards are optional but recommended
Soap – Car Soap
Mitt – Wash Mitt
ADS MF – ADS Premium Microfiber Towel 16 x 16
WW – Meguiar’s Water Magnet Drying Towel

You may be starting out with something as filthy as this, but don’t fret, there is a solution for you.

1. Start by pre-treating any tar, sap, bird droppings etc, with your pre-teat. If N/A move to step #2

2. Next, hose your car down. Do not let the metal tip of the water hose touch your car.
**Note: Some people cut off the tip of the hose, so they don’t have to worry about scratching the car with the metal tip.

3. Fill one of your buckets with just plain water. Fill the other with the appropriate dilution of soap and water. (Insert Grit Guards, Optional)

4. [Optional] Fill your foaming gun with the correct dilution of soap/water, spray the foaming soap liberally over the car.

5. Get your Mitt and 2BM and wash the car. I use front to back motion on the horizontal panels, and a top to bottom motion on vertical panels. Start from the top, and work your way to the bottom of the vehicle. After each panel (or when needed) rinse your mitt in the water only bucket, then return the soap & water bucket for more suds.
**Note, some people use a separate mitt for the upper and lower halves of the vehicle. Do not use the same mitt you use on the body of the car for the underbody, engine, or wheels/tires

6. After you have finished washing all of the body panels, take your BHWB and dip it in the soap bucket, and give your wheels and tires a final wash. Feel freeto use as much soap and water as needed, you won’t be using this bucket on your car anymore.

7. Once you feel you have washed every area of the vehicle, rinse your car, once again do not let the metal tip of the hose touch the car.

8. Inspect for any missed areas. Return to step #4 & #5 if you have missed any wash areas.

9. Dry the car with your WW. Just as you did in washing start from the top of the vehicle down, wringing the WW as needed to extract excess water.

10. Use your ADS MF to dry the wheels, and door, hood, trunk, and gas cap crevices. Make sure to use a different MF for the wheels than the door/hood trunk area.

Now you have completed your wash, sit back and enjoy. Here are some before and afters of what just a wash can do.

How-To: Clean Your Wheels & Tires (Basic)

I will guide you on the process to properly clean your wheels, tires & wheel wells. On my washes I start with the wheels/tires and then when I wash the car, I go from the top down, rewashing the wheels/tires.

WB – Meguiar’s D140 Wheel Brightener
APC+ – Meguiar’s D103 All Purpose Cleaner Plus
SuperD – Meguiar’s D108 Super Degreaser Concentrate
HD – Meguiar’s D170 Hyper Dressing Concentrate
WBD – Meguiar’s D171 Water Based Dressing
PBWS – Poorboys Wheel Sealant
BHWB – Boars Hair Wheel Brush
Wheel Brush – Daytona Speed Master Wheel Brush
Tire Brush – Contour Tire Brush
Wheel Well Brush – SM Arnold 20″ Straight Head Body Brush
Toothbrush – Your Old Tooth Brush

NOTES:
You can use either Super D or APC+. Super D is stronger so if you feel your wheels are dirtier, then stick to that.
You can substitute HD with WBD, to me WBD 1:1 gives the same results as HD 4:1, I don’t use any shiny dilutions, so I am not sure how HD compares to WBD 100%

Here is what your dirty wheel is going to look like

1. Start by liberally spraying your wheel well with SuperD, this will give it time to work into the dirt that is stuck up there while you take care of the wheels & tires.

2. Spray your SuperD in a foaming bottle all over the wheel

3. Agitate the face, spokes and back of the wheel with your BHWB to loosen dirt. Be creative, use a toothbrush to get hard to reach areas. A wheelbrush will be very helpful here to get to the back of the wheel.

4. Spray SuperD on the tire to release any dirt within the sidewalls. (As you can see, it’s working)

5. Agitate the sidewalls with your Tire Brush. once finished rinse the tires and wheels (not the wheel wells) There may still be some browning in the tires, don’t worry.

6. Re-spray the wheels wells with SuperD and agitate them. Try to reach any suspension parts as well. Long handled brushes work best since they can reach all the way to the back, but fear not, I have a step just before you dress your tires & wheel wells that will give everything a final cleaning.

7. Rinse your wheel wells with a decently high pressure from your water system to help remove all the dirt (you will see it all dropping from the wheel wells) Give your wheels and tires a second rinse.

8. Let this air dry, you will be washing the car next, no need to hand dry this yet.

9. Do not dress the tires yet, we will be dressing them later on.
